In our current environment, toilet paper seems to be the item de jeur. I don’t understand how this initially started, but once people started complaining that people were buying up toilet paper, then everyone went out to purchase toilet paper.
To be clear, there is no shortage of toilet paper. In fact, of all the things you should be worrying about, this is not one of them. One thing the United States does well, is producing toilet paper. In fact, the US produces 98% of the toilet paper purchased in the US. We do not rely on anyone outside the country to supply us with toilet paper and there is plenty. The only reason the stores run out is because everyone is buying them up.
We produce a butt load of Toilet Paper.
Prepper’s Decision
This does raise and interesting question; do we consider toilet paper to me an item you need to store in the event of a SIP situation?
With this question in mind, I unbelievably found myself doing research on toilet paper. I discovered, according to the company that produces Charmin, the average family of 4 uses 80,000 sheets of Toilet Paper a year, or essentially 20,000 sheets per person per year.
Here is the basic calculation: 20,000 sheets / 500 sheets per roll = 40 rolls paper per person, per year. It should be easy to calculate from here. A family of 4 needs 40 x 4 = 160 rolls for a years supply or 80 rolls for half a year.
Personally, I am not sure what I am going to do. Certainly, if I decide to store some, it will certainly be a 6 month supply at most. For my family of three, I would need 60 rolls, but I might just get one 48 pack and call it a day.
Now that you know there is no shortage on Toilet Paper, please grab your favorite book, kindle, phone, tablet or whatever and go to the quietest room in your home and spend a few minutes worrying about everything else, but feel free to be generous to your tushy because you can rest knowing there is no Toilet Paper shortage.
