Water Storage

Rationalizing an expenditure for survival gear can be a challenge. You are buying things you hopefully will never need. Plus, the latest trend is trying to downsize and live simply, so the world of preppers and stocking up on disaster supplies are at odds. It’s a tough choice and something you will have to consider. Personally, we do not have a lot of extra income so I set a budget of about $100 per month and have been prioritizing my choices.

Even if you decide to just do the minimum, the first thing you should be buying is water storage. The common thinking is 1 gallon of water, per person, per day. A one month’s supply for my family of 3 will mean 90 gallons of water.

Here is the calculation:
3 gallons per day x 7 days per week x ~4.3 weeks per month for a total of 90 gallons.

Alternatively, you could calculate it this way:
3 gallons per day x 7 days per week x 52 weeks per year / 12 months for a total of 91 gallons month.

I have looked at a number of storage solutions, and the stackable containers seem to be my best option. Plus, if we needed to bug out, these would be easy to grab and load into the truck.

Here are a couple pictures after un-boxing them.

Included in my order was a package of Water Treatment tablets and a nice strap wrench to tighten the caps. With tax an shipping, these were just shy of $100.

I love the containers and they fit nicely in in a small space. Alternatively, I can grab a few of these if I need to make a quick exit.

Conclusion

20 gallons is clearly not enough for me and my family but it’s a start. I am planning on ordering a 75 gallon rain barrel to help make up the difference. This will be temporary, however, as I will have to drain and store the barrel in the winter.

There are a lot of option out there for preppers and there are many considerations.

I also really liked the Water Brick brand as well, but again, these seemed better suited for grab and go if needed. Here is the link to the Water Brick.
